What installation costs in South Bend
We price home charger installation at a flat rate, quoted online before anyone comes to your house. Installs start at $1,200, and flat-rate jobs top out at $2,400. The charger itself is separate: the Emporia Pro is $599.
For an Emporia Pro, three things set the price:
- Distance from your electrical panel. A charger within about 25 feet of the panel is the simplest job. Runs of 25 to 60 feet and 60 to 100 feet cost more.
- The walls in between. Open studs, a basement or an unfinished garage are quick. Finished walls need wire fished through them.
- Where the charger goes. An attached garage is standard. An outside wall or a detached garage takes more material and labor.
If you supply your own charger, the size of your electrical panel and how full it is count too, because a charger without load management can need extra panel work on a 100 amp service.
The flat price includes the permit, the inspection and a dedicated circuit for the charger (48 to 60 amps on the standard job). A run over 100 feet gets a custom quote after a site visit. So does anything the online form could not show, such as a panel that turns out to need a service upgrade. Nothing starts until you approve the number.
What to know in South Bend
Your electric utility
South Bend is served by Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), which pays a monthly bill credit for charging overnight. The details are under Rebates and credits below.
Permits and inspection
Permits come from the joint South Bend and St. Joseph County Building Department at 215 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Suite 100 (574-235-9554). It has a dedicated EV charger permit form, and its 2026 fee schedule lists an "Electrical Vehicle Device" permit at $60. A complete residential application can be issued the same day. With our flat rate the installer handles the permit, and its cost is included.
EV charging equipment is allowed in every South Bend zoning district and at any legally established parking space.
Older homes
The city's 2023 EV infrastructure plan notes that 85 percent of South Bend homes are more than 30 years old, and that older homes may need electrical upgrades before they can safely support a charger. That is where a charger with load management earns its keep. See the panel section below.
How it works
- Answer a few questions online. Which charger, where it goes, how far it is from the panel, and what size panel you have. It takes about a minute, and your flat price appears as soon as you add your contact details.
- Book and pay online. Then we call you to set the install date.
- Permit, install, inspection. South Bend has its own EV charger permit. The permit, the installation and the rough and final inspections are all part of the job.
Installation is done by our partner, Banner Electric. You get your price, book and pay through Otonamo.
Will your panel handle it?
A 48 amp Level 2 charger needs a 60 amp circuit, because electrical code sizes the circuit at 125 percent of a load that runs for hours. On a 200 amp service that is rarely a problem. On an older 100 amp service it can be, and a service upgrade is an expensive job.
That is the reason we sell the Emporia Pro. Its PowerSmart load management watches your home's power use and trims the charger's draw so the total stays within your panel's limit. The aim is full Level 2 charging on the service you already have. Whether it works for your home depends on your panel and how much power you use, so the quote tool asks about your panel, and anything it cannot settle is confirmed with you before any work starts.
Already own a charger, such as a Tesla Wall Connector? We install customer-supplied Level 2 chargers too. See how the Emporia Pro compares with the Tesla Wall Connector.
Rebates and credits
Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) runs Charge Sync Rewards: an $8 bill credit each month, up to $96 a year, for Indiana residential customers who charge on a Level 2 charger between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Enrollment is free. Either your car or your charger has to be on the supported list, not both. Emporia chargers are on it, and so are Tesla vehicles. It is a credit on top of your normal rate, not a cheaper rate, and charging outside the window more than twice in a month forfeits that month's credit. Customers on I&M's net metering or excess distributed generation riders are not eligible, and you can be in only one I&M EV program at a time.
I&M's own pages show no rebate on the charger itself today. Its older $500 offer was tied to a rate plan that closed to new participants on February 28, 2025. Some installer websites still list that rebate, so ask I&M before you count on it.
The federal tax credit for home chargers (the 30C credit) ended for equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026, so a charger installed today earns no federal credit. We know of no statewide Indiana rebate for home chargers as of October 2026.
South Bend charger installation questions
How much does EV charger installation cost in South Bend?
Our flat-rate installs start at $1,200 and top out at $2,400, with the permit and inspection included. The price depends on the distance from your panel, whether the walls are finished, and whether the charger goes in an attached garage, outside or in a detached garage. With a charger you supply, your panel size counts too. The charger is separate: the Emporia Pro is $599.
Do I need a permit to install an EV charger in South Bend?
Yes. Electrical work is on the Building Department's list of jobs that need a permit, and the department has a dedicated EV charger permit form. Its 2026 fee schedule lists the EV device permit at $60. The permit and the inspections are handled as part of the job, and the cost is included in the flat price.
Does I&M pay you to charge at night?
In effect, yes. Indiana Michigan Power's Charge Sync Rewards gives an $8 bill credit each month, up to $96 a year, for charging between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Either your car or your charger must be on its supported list. Emporia chargers and Tesla vehicles both are.
Can a 100 amp panel run a Level 2 charger?
Often, yes. The Emporia Pro's PowerSmart load management watches your home's power use and lowers the charger's draw when the house needs more, so the total stays within your panel's limit. Whether it works for your home depends on your panel and your power use. The quote tool asks about your panel, and anything it cannot settle is confirmed with you before any work starts.
Do you install chargers bought somewhere else?
Yes. We install customer-supplied Level 2 chargers, including the Tesla Wall Connector. Pick "Another Level 2 charger" in the quote tool. A charger without load management can cost more to install on a 100 amp service, and the tool shows that before you book.
Can the charger go outside?
Yes. The Emporia Pro has a NEMA Type 4 watertight enclosure rated for indoor or outdoor use and for temperatures from 22 below zero to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. An outdoor install uses outdoor-rated components and is priced in the quote tool.
