Sell or trade · any EV
Sell your electric car to a dealer that understands the battery
Tesla, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Chevy or anything else with a plug: tell us about it and get a written offer within one business day, good for seven days. On a used EV the battery is most of the story, and we know how to read it.
How it works
- Tell us about your car. A few honest minutes online. The VIN is best, because it tells us the exact build.
- Get your offer. In writing, within one business day, and good for seven days.
- Get paid. Cash out, or put the value toward a car from our inventory. We come to you, or you come to us.
Already have a written instant offer from Kelley Blue Book or CarMax? Bring it. We will beat any verified, current written instant offer for the same vehicle that you show us at or before the sale. Final offers depend on an in-person inspection, a test drive and a title check, and they assume the car matches the description you gave us.
Kelley Blue Book and CarMax are trademarks of their respective owners. Otonamo is not affiliated with or endorsed by either.
How battery health affects your offer
Recurrent, which tracks tens of thousands of EVs, estimates the battery is roughly 30 to 40 percent of an electric car's value. A buyer who does not understand it has to assume the worst. We put an independent Recurrent battery report on every EV we sell, so we know what a healthy battery is worth, and if yours has held up your offer reflects it.
Most have held up. Recurrent reports that outside of large recalls, fewer than 4 percent of the EVs it tracks have needed a battery replacement, and for 2022 and newer cars the figure is 0.3 percent. If you know your car's range on a full charge, tell us in the form. Even a rough number helps.
Getting an EV ready to hand over
- Remove the car from your account. Most EVs are linked to an app. Tesla and Rivian each have a specific order of steps. For other brands, the usual steps are to remove the car from your account in the maker's app and reset the car's system when you hand it over. The owner's manual has the exact menu.
- Clear the personal stuff. Phone pairings, saved addresses, garage door codes and toll tags.
- Gather the charging equipment. The portable charging cable and any adapters that came with the car.
- Find your service records. A documented history supports a stronger offer.
- Know your warranty. The standard EV battery warranty in the US is 8 years or 100,000 miles, and remaining coverage matters to the next owner.
What to bring
- The title. In Indiana, every owner named on the title signs and prints their name in the seller section, and the seller fills in the odometer reading. If an owner cannot be there, a notarized limited power of attorney (Indiana State Form 1940) lets someone sign for them.
- If the title is electronic. Indiana has offered electronic titles since July 1, 2025. Tell us, and we will sort out with you whether it needs to be printed first.
- Loan payoff details. If you still owe on the car, bring the lender's name and your account number so we can get the payoff amount.
- Every key, and the charging equipment that came with the car. Key cards, fobs, the charging cable and any adapters.
- Your driver's license.
Keep your license plate. In Indiana the plate stays with you, not the car. Take it off when you hand the car over. You can move it to another vehicle you own, and the BMV does not require you to return it.
Coming from Michigan? We buy from Michigan owners too. You complete the seller's part of the Michigan title, including the odometer reading, remove your plate and keep it. Michigan asks sellers to keep a copy of the title and a record of the sale for at least 18 months.
If you still owe on it
That is normal, and it does not stop a sale. The usual route is that we get the payoff amount from your lender, pay the loan off and pay you the difference. Before a title can change hands the lender has to release its lien, and with an electronic lien it does that electronically. If you owe more than the car is worth, you can pay the difference, and we will show you the numbers before you decide.
Selling versus trading in
Our offer is the same either way. The difference is sales tax. When you trade your car toward one of ours, Indiana charges its 7 percent sales tax on the price of the car you are buying minus your trade-in allowance. On a $15,000 trade that is $1,050 you do not pay. Sell outright and buy later, and you pay tax on the full price.
If you will title the car you buy in Michigan, Indiana's rules generally have a dealer collect tax at Michigan's 6 percent rate instead of Indiana's 7. Michigan also has its own limit on how much trade-in value it excludes from tax ($12,000 in 2026, rising each year until the limit ends in 2029). How that limit applies to a car bought from an Indiana dealer is a question for the Michigan Department of Treasury. We are not tax advisors, so we lay out the numbers and you confirm them before you sign.

Selling an EV: questions
Does a used EV battery lower what my car is worth?
Only if it has lost more range than normal for its age, and most have not. Battery health is where an EV's value lives, so tell us your range on a full charge when you fill in the form. A healthy battery supports your offer.
Do you only buy electric cars?
No. We buy any make, electric or not. We sell EVs, but your trade-in can be anything.
Will you match an offer from CarMax or Kelley Blue Book?
We will beat it. Bring a verified, current, written instant offer for the same vehicle, such as a Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer or a CarMax written offer that has not expired, show it to us at or before the sale, and we will beat it. Verbal figures, estimates and expired offers do not count.
Can I sell a car I still owe money on?
Yes. We get the payoff amount from your lender, pay off the loan and pay you whatever is left. The lender releases its lien and the title follows.
How long does it take to sell my car to Otonamo?
You get a written offer within one business day of telling us about the car, and the offer is good for seven days. Once you accept, we inspect the car, check the title and pay you.
Do I keep my license plate when I sell?
Yes. In Indiana you remove the plate when you hand over the car. You can move it to another vehicle you own, and the BMV does not require you to return it. Michigan sellers also remove and keep their plate.
