Model Y by year: what changed

The Model Y has been on sale since 2020, and Tesla changes it during the year as well as between years. Use this table as a map, then confirm the details on the car itself.

EPA estimated range when new, as reported by Edmunds, Kelley Blue Book and InsideEVs. Those sources sometimes differ by a few miles for the same version. Wheel size changes the rating, and a used car's real range depends on its battery health.
YearVersions and EPA range when newWhat changed
2020Long Range AWD 316 mi. Performance up to 315 mi.First year. Five seats only.
2021Long Range AWD 326 mi. Performance 303 mi. Standard Range RWD 244 mi (sold briefly in early 2021).Seven seat option arrives. Radar removed from cars built from May 2021.

2024Long Range AWD 310 mi. Long Range RWD 320 mi (from May). RWD 260 mi (until May). Performance 279 mi.Ratings dropped because the EPA changed its test method, not because the car changed.
2025Long Range RWD 337 mi. Long Range AWD 311 mi. Performance 277 mi.Last model year of the original body. Some sources also label the first redesigned cars as 2025s.
2026Premium RWD 357 mi. Premium AWD 327 mi. Performance 306 mi. Standard RWD 321 mi. Standard AWD 294 mi.Redesigned car, often called Juniper, delivered in the US from March 2025. What to check on a used Model Y

  • Hardware 3 or Hardware 4. Tesla moved the Model Y to the Hardware 4 computer during 2023, starting with cars built in late May, so a 2023 can have either. The car tells you on its own screen: Controls, then Software, then Additional Vehicle Information. Tesla has said Hardware 3 cannot run unsupervised self-driving, so this matters if that future matters to you. Hardware 3 versus Hardware 4, explained.
  • Battery warranty. Tesla covers the battery and drive unit for 8 years or 120,000 miles on Long Range, Premium and Performance cars, and 8 years or 100,000 miles on the Rear-Wheel Drive, AWD and Standard versions as its warranty page lists them today, with at least 70 percent of battery capacity retained. The coverage follows the car to the next owner at no cost. For a 2022 or 2023 "AWD" car built in Austin, confirm the term with Tesla by VIN. Ask us what is left on the car you are looking at.
  • Full Self-Driving. As of October 2026 Tesla sells Full Self-Driving (FSD) only as a $99 a month subscription. Tesla says a car whose earlier owner bought FSD outright keeps it, unless that owner moved it to another car before Tesla's transfer program ended on March 31, 2026. The car's Software screen shows whether it is there. FSD is not included with our cars unless the listing says so in plain words. The "FSD computer" line on a listing names the hardware in the car, not the software.
  • Recalls. Most Tesla recalls are fixed by a software update over the air. Check any VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  • Heat pump. Every Model Y has one. It is a big part of why the car holds its range in the cold.
  • Charging. Every Model Y uses Tesla's connector (NACS) and plugs into Superchargers with no adapter, at up to 250 kW on most versions.
  • Seats and towing. Five seats are standard. A third row was optional on Long Range cars from 2021. With the factory tow package, a five seat Model Y is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds.

How Model Y batteries hold up

Recurrent, which tracks tens of thousands of EVs on the road, finds the Model Y keeps about 96 percent of its original range after three years and about 95 percent after five. Those are averages. The Range Score on each of our listings is that specific car's result.

Winter is a separate question. Recurrent's January 2025 data shows the Model Y keeping about 86 percent of its mild-weather range at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, one of the better results among the cars it measured. South Bend's normal January high is 31 degrees and its normal low is 17, so plan for less on the coldest mornings and warm the car while it is still plugged in. More on winter range in northern Indiana.

Charging a Model Y at home

Any Level 2 charger with a Tesla (NACS) plug works. We sell the Emporia Pro in a NACS version for $599, and our installation partner works in Mishawaka, South Bend, Elkhart and Granger, with flat-rate pricing you can get online. Indiana Michigan Power's Charge Sync Rewards program pays enrolled Indiana customers an $8 monthly bill credit for charging overnight on a Level 2 charger, and Teslas are on its list. The installation pages have the details. A charger is sold separately from the car.

Buying from South Bend, Elkhart, Michigan or farther

Our showroom is at 1649 E McKinley Ave in Mishawaka, and we serve South Bend, Granger, Elkhart and the rest of Michiana. We also work with out-of-state buyers. If you live in Michigan or another state, you pay your home state's sales tax and registration instead of Indiana's, and we can estimate those costs up front. We can deliver the car to your door, too.

Used Model Y questions

Does a used Tesla Model Y still have a warranty?

Usually, yes. Tesla's battery and drive unit warranty runs 8 years or 120,000 miles on Long Range, Premium and Performance cars and 8 years or 100,000 miles on the Rear-Wheel Drive, AWD and Standard versions, and it transfers to later owners at no cost. The basic warranty is 4 years or 50,000 miles. Ask us what remains on the car you are looking at.

How do I tell if a Model Y has Hardware 3 or Hardware 4?

On the touchscreen, open Controls, then Software, then Additional Vehicle Information, and read the computer line. As a rule of thumb, cars built from late May 2023 have Hardware 4 and earlier cars have Hardware 3, but a 2023 can be either. We check the screen and list the computer on every Tesla we sell.

Does Full Self-Driving come with a used Model Y?

Only if a previous owner bought it outright and did not move it to another car, according to Tesla. Otherwise FSD is a $99 a month subscription from Tesla, as of October 2026. FSD is not included with our cars unless the listing says so in plain words. The "FSD computer" line on a listing names the hardware in the car, not the software.

How much range does a used Model Y lose?

Not much, on average. Recurrent's data shows the Model Y keeping about 96 percent of its original range after three years and 95 percent after five. Individual cars vary, which is why every car we sell has its own Recurrent battery report.

Is there a federal tax credit for a used EV?

Not today. The federal used clean vehicle credit is not available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. We are not tax advisors, so confirm your own situation with a professional.

Can I trade in my current car?

Yes, any make, electric or not. Tell us about it online and we will send an offer within one business day, good for seven days. Indiana charges sales tax on the price of the car you are buying minus your trade-in allowance.
